Hilton Head's historic downtown — 60+ shops, restaurants, and live entertainment
Coligny Plaza is the closest thing Hilton Head Island has to a downtown — and it's been that way since 1956. That's when Norris Richardson opened Forest Beach Market, the island's first grocery store, on this very spot. Over the next few decades, the plaza grew to include the island's first bakery, hair salon, clothing boutique, and pharmacy. If Hilton Head has a heartbeat, Coligny Plaza is where you feel it most.
Today, the plaza hosts more than 60 shops and restaurants spread across a pedestrian-friendly open-air layout. It's the kind of place where you wander in for a coffee and end up spending the afternoon. The mix of tenants is genuinely eclectic — you'll find a classic beach souvenir shop next to a wine bar, a surf rental spot next to a fine jewelry store. It doesn't feel curated or corporate; it feels like a real place that grew organically over 70 years.
The location is ideal. Coligny Beach Park is literally steps away — you can grab breakfast at Skillets, walk across the street, and be on the sand within two minutes. The beach here is wide, well-maintained, and one of the most accessible on the island. There's a dedicated parking lot at Coligny Beach Park (free), but it fills up fast in summer. The better move is to bike or walk from wherever you're staying.
Live entertainment is a regular fixture at Coligny Plaza, especially in summer. The central courtyard hosts concerts and events throughout the season, and the energy on a warm Friday evening — with families, couples, and locals all mixing together — captures exactly what Hilton Head is supposed to feel like.
Free public beach access steps from the plaza — one of the island's best
Regular concerts and events in the central courtyard, especially in summer
60+ shops ranging from beach souvenirs to fine jewelry and local art
Multiple rental spots in and around the plaza to explore the island
From casual beach bars to sit-down restaurants — something for every appetite
The iconic local grocery store — grab snacks, wine, and Piggly Wiggly merch
Arrive at Coligny Beach Park before 10 AM in summer if you're driving — the free parking lot fills up completely by late morning. Biking is a much better option.
The shoulder seasons (April–May and September–October) are when Coligny Plaza is at its best: warm enough for the beach, but without the summer crowds.
Don't skip the Piggly Wiggly. It's not just a grocery store — it's a Hilton Head institution. The branded merchandise (shirts, hats, koozies) makes for the best local souvenir on the island.
Big Bamboo is the best spot for live music in the evening. It's been a Coligny institution for years and the atmosphere is genuinely fun — not touristy.
