Ideal Time

Tybee Island is Savannah's beach — a small barrier island at the mouth of the Savannah River that has been a Georgia vacation destination since the 1800s. It's less polished than Hilton Head and proud of it. The lighthouse is one of the best in the Southeast, the seafood is excellent, and the vibe is pure, unpretentious beach town. If you're visiting Savannah, Tybee is a natural add-on.

Getting There

Take US-278 West to I-95 South toward Savannah, then take US-80 East toward Tybee Island. The drive from Hilton Head is approximately 50 miles and takes about 1 hour. Paid parking is available near the main beach and lighthouse.

What To Do on Tybee

Tybee Island Lighthouse

One of the oldest and tallest lighthouses in the Southeast, built in 1736. Climb the 178 steps to the top for panoramic views of the Georgia coast. The lighthouse museum and keeper's cottage are also worth exploring.

North Beach

The quieter, more local end of Tybee's beach. Less crowded than the main beach area, with great views of the lighthouse and the inlet. A favorite spot for fishing, shelling, and watching boats pass through the channel.

Fort Pulaski National Monument

A stunning Civil War-era fort just 15 minutes from Tybee. The 1862 Battle of Fort Pulaski was a turning point in military history — the first successful use of rifled cannon against masonry fortifications. The fort and surrounding marshes are beautiful.

Tybee Island Marine Science Center

A small but excellent marine science center with touch tanks, aquariums, and exhibits on the Georgia coast ecosystem. Great for families with kids.

Back River

The calm, protected waters on the back side of Tybee Island are perfect for kayaking, paddleboarding, and watching the sunset. Several outfitters rent equipment and offer guided tours.

Main Beach & Pier

Tybee's main beach is lively and fun — a classic American beach town with a pier, pavilion, and a strip of bars and restaurants. Less polished than Hilton Head, but full of character.

Where to Eat

The Crab Shack

Seafood

A Tybee institution — a sprawling, casual seafood restaurant built on a tidal creek. Peel-and-eat shrimp, steamed crab, and cold beer in an only-in-Georgia setting.

AJ's Dockside Restaurant

Seafood

Right on the water with great views and a menu focused on fresh Georgia seafood. The shrimp tacos and fish and chips are local favorites.

North Beach Bar & Grill

Casual American

A laid-back spot near the lighthouse serving burgers, sandwiches, and cold drinks. Great for a casual lunch after visiting the lighthouse.
