Beaufort (pronounced "BYOO-fort") is one of the oldest cities in South Carolina and one of the most beautiful small cities in the South. Its historic district is a showcase of antebellum architecture, its waterfront is genuinely lovely, and its connection to Gullah-Geechee culture gives it a depth that most tourist towns lack. Author Pat Conroy called it home, and it's easy to see why.
Getting There
Take US-278 West off Hilton Head, then US-17 North to SC-170 West toward Beaufort. The drive is approximately 40 miles and takes about 1 hour. Free parking is available throughout the historic district and along the waterfront.
