Horseback trail rides through the Sea Pines Forest Preserve, pony rides, and a small animal farm — one of Hilton Head's most beloved family experiences.
Lawton Stables sits on 25 acres in the heart of the Sea Pines Resort, and it's been a Hilton Head institution for decades. The trail rides take you deep into the 600-acre Sea Pines Forest Preserve — beneath a canopy of palmettos and moss-covered live oaks — on gentle, well-trained horses that are comfortable for riders of all experience levels. The guides are knowledgeable about the island's history and wildlife, and the pace is kept at a walk so you can actually take it all in.
The small animal farm is a completely separate experience and one of the best free-to-visit spots on the island for families with young children. Goats, miniature donkeys, alpacas, pigs, and miniature cows all live here, and kids can purchase feed at the office and hand-feed the animals along the fence line. Pony rides are available Tuesday through Sunday for children 18 months to 7 years old.
The trail ride books up fast in peak season — sometimes weeks in advance. If horseback riding is on your list, book it before you arrive. The animal farm, on the other hand, is first-come-first-served and a great spontaneous stop any day of the week.
